Description (revised)

TRIUMPH TR-7

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME

The car was characterized by its "wedge" shape which was advertised as: "The Shape of Things to Come." The design was penned by Harris Mann who also designed the wedge-shaped Leyland Princess; and by a curved line in the bodywork going from the door to the rear. The car had an overall length of 160 inches, width of 66 inches, wheelbase of 85 inches and height of 49.5 inches. The coupé  had a curbside weight of 2005 pounds.

During development, the TR7 had the code name "Bullet".

Power was provided by a 105 bhp (92 bhp in the North American version) 1998 cc 8-valve four-cylinder engine which shared the same basic design as the Triumph Dolomite Sprint engine mounted in-line at the front of the car. Drive was to the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox initially with optional five-speed gearbox or three-speed automatic from 1976. The front independent suspension used coil spring and damper struts and lower single link at the front, and at the rear was a four link system again with coil springs. There were front and rear anti roll bars, with disc brakes at the front and drums at the rear.

In early 1979, Triumph belatedly introduced a convertible version, called the TR7 Drophead (convertible), which first went on sale in the US. The British market received it in early 1980.

British Leyland ran a team of TR7s in rally competition from 1976 to 1980,

which were reasonably successful.

The Triumph TR7 was cancelled in 1981. In total, 112,368 TR7s were built.

This particular TR7 was my Dad’s car. He had purchased it from a gentleman in Staten Island, N.Y., and drove it to his home in Oneonta, N.Y. (about a four-hour drive). My Dad had intensions of having the car repainted, so he had removed the lights, trim, etc. in order to prep it for the body shop. All of the removed items are included, and depicted in the photos.

This TR7 has been fitted with dual Weber carbs, and has a header exhaust. It has the 5-speed transmission. It has also been converted to power windows. My Dad had removed the pulleys in order to paint and detail same. He never had the opportunity to get everything back together, so currently it is not running, but in my opinion could be in under a day.

It has aftermarket wheels, with decent tread left on the tires. There are three original Triumph mag wheels included in the sale (I’m sorry, but I do not have photos of these wheels). Also included are some miscellaneous spare parts (distributor, instrument panel, etc.).

There are two, new (still in the bag) side view mirrors included with the extra parts.

Actual mileage is unknown.

Please note that the "commission number" provided in this listing is not the actual commission number of the vehicle. Actual number is available to bidders - as the car is located in Oneonta, NY, I do not have access to the actual number at the time of listing - thanks.

The body is straight and clean, with no real rust, dents, or prior bodywork observed.

It would appear that one could very easily prep and paint the car, or simply re-install all the trim,

and drive it as-is.

As mentioned, this TR7 is located in Oneonta, N.Y., which is approximately 1.5 hours west of Albany, New York. The vehicle is garaged, and is located less than 2-miles from Route 88.

I can assist with loading the vehicle onto your truck or trailer.

This is very straight TR7, with what we feel is a clean body, which would be an easy project. We reserve the right to end this auction early, as this vehicle is also advertised for sale locally. The transferable New York State Title is clear and in my possession. The successful bidder must provide a minimum $500 Deposit, (Cash or U.S. Postal Money Order) within 72 Hours of winning the auction. We will store the vehicle until the end of August, and can assist in providing the winning bidder with contact information for a local, reliable, long-distance transport firm.  Bidders are reminded that they are bidding on a nearly 27-year old vehicle, and as such, no warranties are given, implied, or written. The vehicle is located in Oneonta, NY, which is approximately a 4-hour drive from New York City, or a 1.5-hour drive from Albany, NY.

Bidders with zero feedback, or with feedback less than 90% must contact the seller first in order to qualify their bid.  We reserve the right to cancel any bid at any time, and to end the auction at any time, as vehicle is for sale locally.
